the start was delayed last week. abc7 news reporter, amy hollyfield, has a preview from treasure island. >> in with the new -- the new beautiful bay bridge behind us -- out with the old. they are starting to demolish the old bridge. the project is expected to cost $281 million. officials say it is a dangerous job. they will take it down one piece at a time. they are getting a late start. the plan was to start after the new bridge opened labor day weekend. they were so busy dealing with the bolt issue on the new bridge, that delayed the planning on the demolition. they are a couple of months late getting started. it will not be a quick job. it is dangerous. one piece at a time. it will take three years before they can get it taken down and moved out.

>> in the philippines, survivors of typhoon haiyan are making it out of the country as supplies are slowly making their way in. the philippine military planes are transporting victims from tacloban to manila. the death toll now is 1,700 but it is expected to go much higher. the united states is pledging $20 million in immediate air. the outpouring of support continues in the bay area. >> they are bringing whatever they can. this man drove across the bridge from oakland to put $4 in0 in te collection box and this new mom dropped off baby food. watching imaging of the suffering children was too much. >> the thought of not having food for your baby although my

and stabbing during a party at his home last year. smith has other legal troubles. recently he took a leave of absence to enter rehab after a d.u.i. arrest in september before rejoining the team last week. aa memorial service is held at 10:00 for a t.s.a. officer killed when a gunman walked in and opened fire at los angeles international airport. the suspect, paul ciancia, is accused of killing a 3-d-year-old hernandez and injuring three others november 1. the attorney general holder is expected to attend the service at the l.a. memorial sports arena. ciancia faces the death penalty. >> a city will pass newant smoking guidelines today. the lafayette city council will meet and formally adopt the chains after community input. the new rules will ban smoking at outdoor public areas, dining areas, and prevent lighting up

the peninsula, san francisco, and all the way up to the north bay coast. a little drizzle is possible. there are higher elevations along the coast and the possibility of drizzle. our best bet is the north bay for measurable rain. check out warm it is compared to yesterday: five degrees in san jose and 12 in concord and 15 in napa and 14 in novato and two in oakland and three at sfo. right now, everyone including san francisco oakland and down to san jose, all 57 degrees including livermore. 55 in san ramon and concord. los gatos and half moon bay at 54, and 55 in novato and 52 in santa rosa and napa. our best chance of measure average rain is now through the noon hour with brakes in the cloud cover at 4:00 and into the evening. notice how mild the temperatures are, low-to-mid 50's and mid-to-upper 60's at noon and upper 60's to 70's away from the

the city. it has swallowed several streets and getting bigger by the hour at 80' wide and 20' long and moving closer to the homes. it started as a water main break. >> san jose police arrested these people responsible, they say, for a string of crimes including carjackings, robberies, a kidnapping and a press constitution ring. police say the 18-year-old and 19-year-old and 20-year-old ran the prostitution ring out of san jose motels. they are suspected of robbing and carjacking two men last month. police think the three may be responsible for a bank robbery. >> new details on a bit are labor dispute involving santa clara county's private ambulance provider and the union. they reached agreement on a new contract, which comes after a year of talks with rural metro. the deal requires the hiring of

more ambulance mechanics and pay raises. the county has a history of problems with rural metro which has been plagued by financial problems and complaints over late response time. >> this morning, two medical groups release new guidelines for drugs used to lower high cholesterol. the associations are focusing on patient whose take the cholesterol lowering drugs with doctors taking into account new criteria from prescribing, including stroke risk and ethnicity. the number of patients could double to 30 percent of all american adults. >> vitamin or supplements you take isn't helping and could hurt your health. guidelines from the task force say some supplements could do more harm than good. vitamin e has in disease-fighting benefits and

some can cause greater chances of smokers in folks at risk. you need to get vitamins from a well balanced diet. >> parents, how is your child's school lunch? has it been overhauled? a school in new york is getting a lot of attention after adopting an all vegetarian menu. the students love it and it looks like other schools could be ready to copy the program m. >> it is like any other school cafeteria at first glance. but in queens, new york, they are not serving up mystery meat. they have dropped meat from the menu altogether. this is the first public school in the country to serve only vegetarian options. >> it was never officially about the vegetarianism as it was about helping them understand there are more choices. >> the idea, controversial at

first. >> we have people saying my kids are not vegetarians why do they eat vegetarian meals? >> the kids are eating it up. >> delicious. >> this is the challenge for other schools that have started serving healthy foods: their options did not take this good. >> when the national lunch program required parenting schools to serve lower calorie meals, some students revolted and districts backed out of the program saying they were losing tens of thousands in food students refused to eat. but at this school in queens, the secret to getting students to like healthy food isn't just in the recipes. it is in education. with weekly classes teaching students about making nutritious choices.

the northern radar returns in the same fashion. the rain is 12,000 to 15,000' where the rain is saturated and where the radar is hitting so you are seeing the arc hitting the rain in the clouds and if anything did follow this is a huge area of dry air right under that from 12,000 feet to the surface. that is why sprinkles, at best, and maybe light rains in the north bay the next couple of hours. the big part of the system, that is well to the north with the best chance of rain to our north from mendocino county to vancouver. this is how it looks from the east bay hills. the clouds are not touching the east bay hills. it is clear over to san francisco. we will put some sprinkles, possibly some light rain in the morning forecast. we will have a little bit of

clearing. that will continue tonight. we have moisture and marine patchy fog in the north bay tomorrow morning for the commute and it will be mild and dry through the extended forecast. the temperatures today are going to be warmer than yesterday and low-to-mid 70's in the south bay and cupertino is 72 and los gatos at 74. up the peninsula, we have upper 60's to low 70's today from 67 in millbrae to 72 in los altos and low-to-mid 60's in downtown san francisco, and 66 in sausalito, and low 70's through the north bay valleys, and if i thought there would be a lot rain i would not put 70's in the forecast because the rain would keep it cooler, and upper 60's to low 70's along the coast and low-to-mid 70's into the another bay valley. temperatures are cooler with most of us in the mid-to-upper 40's and a few 50's around richmond and san francisco. this morning, a lot loud cover and a few radar returns and by noon, you can see clearing and

developing during the evening commute. the seven-day forecast shows a couple of degrees cooler and by saturday, sunday, and monday, otherwise, the next four days temperatures are going to be above average. have a good one. >> we are starting off in gilroy with both sides of highway 152 closed down because of a tanker truck accident with the lanes blocked off for another hour. we are seeing delays as you make it in the westbound direction toward 101. headed into the north bay, southbound highway 29 between highway 12 and 121 we have tree work so watch out for construction crews. outside, it will be san jose traveling along 280 northbound away from 17, a few cars northbound and southbound with highway 17 in the back ground and all is quiet in san jose.
